Estate Management

Estate management department was among the five programmes domiciled in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences from its inception in 1982. However, off the initially five (5) programmes, Land Surveying and Estate Management was joint department until in March 1990, the Estate Management programme was separated from Land Surveying to remain as an independent single department/programme in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences.

Estate management from inception and to date offers progressions that lead to the award of: Bachelor of Technology (B-Tech); Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Estate Management; Master of Sciences (MSc) in Estate Management with option in either  (Real Estate Valuation and Investment Analysis, Real Estate Development and Project Management, Facility/Property Maintenance and Management, Environmental Valuation and Management, and Land Management and Sustainable Development); and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Estate Management. All the programmes are fully accredited by both the professional body of Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria (ESVARBON) and Nigeria University Commission (NUC).

The Estate management is principally concerned with the direction, supervision and control of interests in landed property, as well as, the study of the use, development and management of land, natural resources and the built environment. All are geared towards obtaining maximum economic returns from the available resources, taking cognisance of the social and political recompences and long-term development. Therefore, the department is established to produce competent Estate Surveyors and Valuers with sufficient technical knowledge and skills to improve the use of land resources and thereby facilitate the economic development of University and the Nation at large.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMME

The philosophy of the programme is to:

i. Instill in students an appreciation of the complex nature of the relationships between man and his environment.

ii. Involve the students in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying.

iii. Provide a broad understanding on and buildings, their construction and use.

iv. Develop in the students the ability to apply their analytical skills to finding solutions to theoretical and practical land resource problems.

v. Develop in the students, entrepreneurial skills of value in self-employment within the profession.

vi. Develop in the students, survival skills in an ever-changing economic, technological and political world.

The Department is established to produce competent Estate Surveyors and Valuers with sufficient technical knowledge and skills to optimize the use of land resources and thereby facilitate the economic development of the Nation.  Estate Management is concerned with the supervision and control of an interest in landed property.  It may also be defined as the study of the use development and management of land, other natural resources and the built environment. The basic function of the Estate Surveyor and Valuer is to obtain the maximum economic returns from available resources, having regard to the social advantages and long-term developments.  The course is designed to prepare students for responsible career positions in the land management profession upon graduation.  The varying demands and complex legal, socio-economic and political factors relating to land, calls for graduates with considerable understanding and in-depth knowledge of the theoretical base relating to the administration of the land, together with a sound and broadly based knowledge of the techniques and practices of property valuation; Building construction; Land Surveying; Town Planning; Land Law; Land economics; Property Management Property Development.

The employment prospects of graduates in Estate Management are excellent.  There is a wide range of opportunities in occupations dealing with land management, development and planning, property valuation, Estate agency property maintenance, etc.  others find interesting careers in banking and other financial institutions, in consultancy, in management, agriculture, and in Urban and Regional analysis.
